Phil Spencer talks about the future of Xbox consoles and why gamers will still want them
Phil described how Xbox can win by using hardware innovation, rather than exclusive games. "I want people to choose hardware based on the capabilities of that hardware and how that fits into the choices they want to make about where they want to play. We want our hardware to win based on the hardware capabilities we have."
Spencer described how the most successful games today are simply games that are everywhere, describing titles such as Fortnite, Minecraft and so on, so Microsoft's policy is to create highly successful titles by making sure that they are playable on as many devices as possible. "I want to create a platform that serves creators who are looking to meet people on every screen." Spencer reiterated previous comments from figures such as Xbox president Sarah Bond, who said the company remains all about the hardware, describing it as fundamental to Xbox. "Regarding our hardware, I think it's fundamental to what Xbox is. I don't forget that "box" is part of our brand name. I say that from the position I am in, I consider hardware a fundamental part of what we do, but without trying to keep games out of other devices".
The intentions of Phill Spencer and the whole Xbox team are therefore clear in wanting to focus strongly on hardware, understood as the best tool to access the software created by Xbox Game Studios and other developers, but at the same time it is Phill Spencer's intention to overcome the steriotypes of the past, based on console exclusives, trying to bring games and content created by Xbox Game Studios to as many platforms (and screens) as possible, leaving gamers the choice of which platform to use based on their tastes and preferences.
We just have to wait to find out the features of the next hardware that, in Spencer's intentions, will push us to choose it as our gaming platform!
