Bethesda: Microsoft will honor existing, exclusive future agreements decided on a case-by-case basis

News of Microsoft's acquisitionof ZeniMax Media, Bethesda and related studios has shocked the gaming world today, and many wonder if the many titles in development at Todd Howard's behemoth will now become Xbox exclusive. Franchises like DOOM, The Elder Scrolls and Wolfenstein will have their exclusive home on Microsoft platforms? And what about the titles already announced on PlayStation?

Phil Spencer said that, as with previous acquisitions, Microsoft intends to honour the pre-existing agreements. This means that the two Bethesda games already announced as PS5 time exclusives, namely Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo, will only arrive on Xbox once the exclusivity period is over.

As for everything else, though, Spencer explained that of course all games will arrive at day one on Xbox, Xbox Game Pass and PC (including the streaming console), while as far as the other platforms are concerned, " it will be decided on acase-by-case basis".

This means that Microsoft will decide where it makes the most sense to keep a game exclusively on Xbox and PC and where it makes more sense to open it to other platforms. It is very likely that this decision will be made on the basis of the nature of the games: those more similar to GaaS experiences, which therefore benefit from a very large installed base, could also arrive elsewhere, while the most typically single player or multi-player titles "classic" will probably remain exclusive to the Xbox ecosystem.

We just have to wait for the developments to find out what will really happen!
