More Xbox Series X information: Custom SSD, ray-tracing audio, game suspension, and more

Following the revelation a few days ago with the first Xbox Series Xspecifications, Microsoft's gaming division chief Phil Spencer and development director Jason Ronald spoke on Major Nelson's latest podcast, breaking other exciting news about the long-awaited and powerful next-generation console. We'll list them below.

  • SSD custom: Spencer explained that the console will integrate a custom SSD, that is, made specifically for the console in order to maximize the speed of read and write operations.
  • Multiple game suspension: today on Xbox One we can now suspend a game and resume it even after a shutdown, as long as it is done in the "fast start" mode; when we start a new title, the previous title is closed. On Xbox Series X, however, thanks to the use of the SSD as a fast and permanent virtual memory, it will be possible to suspend multiple games, and the state of the suspension will last even after a full reboot or after the console has long been disconnected from the current. This will allow us to freeze one title, start another, suspend the title and return to the first where we left it.
  • Ray-tracingaudio : the ray-tracing acceleration hardware present in the console will not only be usable for graphics, but also for sound: if the developers want it, they can realistically simulate the propagation of sound waves within an environment, thus creating realistic effects of reverb, echo or even distortion of sound depending on the materials traversed. This will give rise to even more immersive environments.
  • Next-gen backward compatibility:We already know that Xbox Series X will be compatible with the entire Xbox One stock park and all Xbox 360 games and the first Xbox today backward compatible, but Ronald explained that in addition to the performance and resolution improvements that Xbox users now have to expect from this type of game, the new console will offer the opportunity to improve them in completely new ways. It did not go into detail but we think that one possibility is to improve the textures through artificial intelligence, to make sharper and more defined textures born in low resolution; is an area where Microsoft has made great progress.

All new features that aim to improve the experience of the players, beyond the mere power: we can't wait to experience them in person!
