Milestone talks about the new A.I. system in MotoGP 19

Developed in more than two years of collaboration with the engineers and data scientist of Orobix, a company specialized in the engineering of Artificial Intelligence Solutions, A.N.N.A. represents a revolutionary paradigm shift compared to the traditional AI systems, in which each action was set a priori by a programmer.

With the AI based on neural networks instead, the approach is completely different; Programmers no longer impose predetermined behaviors, but provide artificial intelligence with a vision of the surrounding world, a goal and the actions to be used to achieve it. Through a sophisticated rewarding mechanism, programmers inform AI about what behaviors are useful for achieving the purpose and which are harmful; It will then be the AI to learn the best way to achieve the goal set.

This approach to machine learning is called Reinforcement Learning and it allows to obtain an AI really aware of the environment that surrounds it and of what it is doing, unlike other approaches that restrict the action of AI to predetermined behaviors . In The first case the strategy of the game emerges from the interaction of the AI with the environment, in the second is imposed.

The training phase based on reinforcement learning allows you to simulate an incredibly high number of races in a short time (in a single day you can simulate more than 200,000 races, more than a professional driver can accumulate in all his life ), during which its main activities can be grouped in two macro-moments: the so-called exploration, to which the AI seeks to understand if the consequences of all its action are positive or negative to the attainment of its purpose, and the so-called exploitation, In which the AI exploits its experience and accumulated knowledge to obtain the best reward possible

The result of this work is an extremely realistic and natural driving behavior, in which manoeuvres and driving techniques are very similar to those of a professional driver.
