Dishonored 2: Bethesda tells us about the evolution of Emily and Raven
Dishonored 2 – evolution of Emily and Raven
He was the Royal Protector, charged with the murder of Empress Jessamine Kaldwin, unjustly imprisoned and sentenced to death. Escaped with difficulty on the day of his execution, is branded by the external Crow otherworldly Attano gaining supernatural powers and becoming a murderer. Desperate to protect his daughter by Jessamine, Emily, and to return the throne, Crow ventures seeking revenge for the death of the Empress.
Powerful protagonist, Crow has emerged as a figure beloved and heroic. But what about the heart of the first chapter of Dishonored, is undoubtedly the character Emily Kaldwin won over the players. Still a child at the time of Dishonored, Emily was the mirror of the player's actions. Raven's choices had a profound effect not only on the world around us, but also on Emily, which decorated the walls of his hideout with designs that reflect your mood. "Many players have told us they have changed the way you play after returning from a mission particularly violent and have found disturbing drawings of Emily, made with dark colors" reveals the co-Creative Director of Arkane, Harvey Smith.
Set 15 years after the events of the first title, Dishonored 2 sees the return of not only Kaldwin, but also of Emily Attano Crow. Once again, the game opens with Jessamine: in the opening sequence, Crow and Emily will pay tribute to the former Empress. "The murder of Jessamine casts a shadow on both titles," says Smith. However, this time Emily will be a playable character and totally adult. "It's ambitious offer two main characters in the game and let the players choose freely," says Smith, "but we are excited by this choice."
It is one thing to be excited about, another is to transform a non-player character in one of two protagonists, imagining not only how this young Empress evolved than when she was a child, but also what it could provide in terms of game mechanics with respect to expert and disillusioned protector.
Dunwall, Empress ... killer
From the earliest stages of the development of Dishonored 2, Emily has always been a focal point for Arkane. According to Smith, the team was "obsessed" with the idea of an Emily bigger than 15 years. As you would have acted on the throne? How would become without their mother? How would grow under the guidance of the Royal Protector?
"In approaching a character like Emily, we needed to know its history, its behaviour and even his interests," says Smith, "but at the level of development of the game, we also had to know what was your key points. And so, we have come to the following conclusions: Dunwall, Empress, assassin. ".
In contrast to Crow, a native of Serkonos (whose capital is Karnaca, the main setting of Dishonored 2), Emily was born and raised in Dunwall, product of a metropolitan culture inspired by England. But Emily is not a city any: "Apart from A tragic moment during the plague of first Dishonored, Emily had a comfortable childhood," explains Smith. Had the best tutors. The best clothes. Has been protected (maybe too much) like no other in Dunwall. In a nutshell, he lived the life of an empress. However, Emily was not only raised by Crow, but also trained by him. "Crow has always imagined that one day Emily's enemies would come with guns blazing," revealed Smith, "so Dishonored 2 the girl has the potential to become a real murderer.".
Important differences
These three key points are reflected in the behavior of Emily in her powers ... and even in her clothes. "Emily is not wearing some rags," says Smith. "Brings an asymmetrical cut jacket with gold embroidery worthy of a noble grew up in the Palace. Has good taste and the best tailors in the country. " Even Emily's arms reflect its status as Empress: "When holding a gun or a crossbow, you'll understand that were created by the best craftsmen of the Empire of the Islands" reveals Smith.
Even Emily's powers, new and completely different from those of Crow, reflect the character. "In a sense, we can say that the external marking people according to their personality," says the Chief Designer Dinga Bakaba. "It is an empress. He's younger. Has a different personality. Then, his powers reflect all these things. Has various powers that allow her to dominate the will of another. ". A perfect example is hypnosis, evoking oblivion entity able to charm enemies of Emily, allowing it to easily delete them or move on does not view. Another example: Domino, connecting more people so that every action affects all targets online. Worthy of an empress. "Emily is an expert at controlling people" explains Bakaba.
All original powers of Crow, instead, are taken from the original game, expanded and strengthened. "Now you can gain power-ups and there is a tree of power" reveals Bakaba. "I think the players will live an interesting experience playing both as Emily, both in those of Crow, because having different powers means finding different solutions to problems and live different experiences."
Evocative dubbing
The team at Arkane has spent considerable time to imagine the evolution of Crow. After fifteen years, Crow is Real Dragons and protector real ... The first in the history of the Empire to have combined the two charges. Perhaps the greatest change in Crow is the addition of voice acting. In the first chapter of the series, Raven was a silent protagonist. Now, instead, speaks.
"I'm really excited about the choice of the voice of Crow" admits Smith. "For the English version, we were lucky to get the cooperation of Stephen Russell, Garrett's voice of the first Thief. 15 years have passed, and Raven once again will return to protect Emily. Stephen has now centered on character. ".
The addition of dubbing will allow players to immerse themselves in the history of Dishonored 2 in different ways, depending on the character chosen. Although Emily (dubbed in English by actress Erica Luttrell) and Crow tackle the same missions and meet mostly the same characters, will have their own views and their own reactions. For Crow, the trip from Dunwall to Karnaca is a homecoming of sorts. "Playing Dishonored 2, you can visit the neighborhood where he grew up" revealed Smith. For Emily, the trip to Karnaca is a different experience: "earlier Dishonored 2, will lose everything and run away," says Smith. "For the first time, Emily finds herself exposed to the lives of ordinary people. Both characters have their views, and this was an important aspect to recreate. "
