During an interview Philippe Morrin, co-founder of studio Red Barrels, declared that Outlast II will be inspired by actual events including the Jonestown massacre of 1978, which saw over 900 Peoples Temple cult followers died in a mass suicide under the guidance of spiritual leader Jim Jones.

Morrin explains that his team has studied the Jonestown Massacre and took inspiration for developing Outlast II : " after all, this is the largest mass suicide of the seventies ," he says. Also talking about the game itself has stated that this second installment will be tied to the facts of the first, but didn't want to add more details.
