Dedicated servers and Microsoft Azure for gaming: where they are and what is the average ping?
Microsoft has the Azure cloud computing service since February 2010, with 6 data center (taken after 8 and 10 soon), but only with the advent of the Xbox One started to make them available to developers for online multiplayer. Here is where are located:
United States
- North Central area: Chicago, Illinois
- South-Central zone: San Antonio, Texas
- Western area: California
- East: Virginia
Europe
- Northern Europe: Dublin, Ireland
- West Europe: Amsterdam, Netherlands
Asia
- East Asia: Hong Kong, China
- Southeast Asia: Singapore
Europe, including Italy, is therefore served mainly by two data centers, both located in the Central-Western area and North of the Alps. But this does not mean that you cannot connect to other regions: you can in fact reach American servers with a ping to 200ms. Obviously the priority is always given to the nearest centers, with a maximum ping within 100ms. Exception: Sardinia and Sicily in these two regions is guaranteed that at least one of the two European server is reachable within 100 ms (it is likely that the server in Dublin, that further north, offer scant benefits to users of the Italian Islands). Recap below as the Italian players are connected to Azure.
Italy (excluding Islands)
- Primary Server: Dublin and Amsterdam can be reached with maximum ping within 100ms.
- Other servers: All American ones, with ping about 200ms.
- Excluded: Asian servers.
Sardinia and Sicily
- Primary Server: Amsterdam, maximum ping within 100ms.
- Other servers: Dublin (above 100ms) and us (200ms).
- Excluded: Asian servers.
In essence, most Italian players get a chance to face good matches on those titles supported by Azure servers, since they seem guaranteed benefits under 100ms. But a good portion of the quality of the connection also makes the player: If your ADSL line is not the best of the potential and trudging in providing decent latencies, you can certainly expect miracles from Azure.
We hope you made good information on data easily available to the public and that the lag is never with you!
