In a recent interview by Philippe Bergeron from Ubisoft, at E3, it was confirmed that the sort of mini-game "tower defense" style present in Assassin's Creed: Revelations in Assassin's Creed III there will be and this, according to, Bergeron, is a wise choice by the team. The designers stated that such a function, mostly optional in the previous game in the series, does not have aroused particular interest in players and in the international press and in the third chapter will try to resolve the various problems that have plagued the saga.
