Ten years after Emergence Day, as the locust Horde advances toward the last bastion of humanity, Ephyra, a bloody war that saw billions of people die, Marcus Fenix does the unthinkable: disobeys orders and abandons his post during a critical battle in an attempt to save his father, Adam Fenix weapons scientist. But Adam is buried under the rubble during a fierce assault on the residence of Fenix and Ephyra passes into the hands of the enemy. Marcus, in mourning for a father who all believe dead, is facing court martial for failure to comply with the orders and is sentenced to 40 years in the most brutal prison of Coalition Governments, simply known as the Slab.

Adam, however, is still alive, ripped from destruction by the elite Guards Onyx on the orders of President Richard Prescott. It is now far from home and in what has so much flavor to be a prison, a bunker of the COG on the tropical island Azura, a hidden place in the world in the evening since the Pendulum wars. His guilt and his biggest secret was exposed: Adam was aware of the fact that the Locusts were found in the subsoil of Evening up the days before Emergence Day and that had always been more on the surface due to a lethal parasite, then known as shining. Now must find a way to destroy the Shining while the COG forces are increasingly attempting to restrain the growing army of Locusts which is threatening to invade the city.

While Adam struggles to redeem himself in what looks like an island-prison, Marcus tries his own Atonement in those dingy walls of the closed world of the Slab. While Dom Santiago and Anya Stroud struggle to obtain his freedom, Marcus discovers little by little a kind of kinship with the most dangerous criminals in the evening and a way of advancing his personal war against the Locusts.
