Speaking to CVG, Mike Hayes, head of Sega West, said that the idea of creating a hypothetical Shenmue III has not yet been ruled out by this company. "Never say never," said Hayes back then to keep alive the idea of a sequel to the game. On the other hand multiple times Sega has teased fans with this idea. It is hoped that soon Shenmue III is officially announced.
